Bill, you once again picked a tale worth telling! While most bands evolve, I think the success of the Rolling Stones was dependent on never becoming musically better--by design. They simply looped the same music and message to their core audience of the moment for over 50 years. While Bob Dylan sang "The times they are a-changing," the Stones sang "These times will never change.” They were both right.

Bill, as usual, you put the pith in pithy--loved your little argument with yourself there. That being said, I totally agree, the whole thing is a towering monument to greed and wrongheaded use of art in the name of nostalgia. It's also a shame that I could only see them if I were on the guest list (the only time I ever did get to see them was in Pasadena at the Rosebowl with Ed and Rose Cherney and I believe I was). My question is, who's the opening act and what kind of money are they getting? Ha! And hugs to you, TwangGuru, I've been on the bare bulb side of the tip jar of late and so appreciate your observations. j.

People are worth exactly what they can get or will settle for. Business is business. Still, it's too bad the Stones don't seem to give a damn about the folks who've kept them in business all this time. Stones to fans: "You can't always get what you want." And they don't care.

Hey, this is off the subject but I heard a great Jeff Beck anecdote. Beck, always the perfectionist, went to George Martin's office wanting to do the two thousandth take of a song on "Blow by Blow." George politely said, "But Jeff, the record's been in the stores for over a month."

Bill Wyman was born in 1936, three years before the outbreak of World War II. Wow... do the math. Just this year, two Woodstock guys (Alvin Lee and Richie Havens) kicked the bucket. The only artists from that era who need to tour are bands like Strawberry Alarm Clock. This should be the swan song for The Stones.

You're so right, Bill. Brilliant branding by Oldham and utterly outrageous ticket prices these days. I paid $5.50 to see the 'Exile' tour in '72! To quote another British rock star, "I'd call that a bargain, the best I ever had." Of course, one cannot deny that the Stones really had the goods to back it up, and to become some of the finest songwriters of the rock era. That's the reason we still care, everything else notwithstanding.
