Like the Beach Boys (and just about anyone else with a pen and guitar/piano), the Stones wanted to match or better the Beatles.
Eee gads, lads, the old recording studio is a bit of a pricey environment in which to be conducting psychological warfare, innit? Spoiler Alert: At least Andrew Loog Oldham lived to tell the tale. Brian Jones wouldn't be so lucky.

So who do we blame for all this behavior? Music, money and drugs? "What's new Pussy Cat?" or "Ain't nothing new under the sun"? What was once underground, secret and swept away quietly is now above ground, loud and doing quite nicely in olde London Town. No surprise, given the benefits to the Kingdom and the CASH! Even acts that struggled there made it here. We love Elton John, but it took Kiki Dee to get him his first #1 at home! All I want for Christmas is all the LPs I had before I left for the military...

With Sgt. Pepper in '67, the Beatles showed a new level of sophistication, as well as a genius for altruistic themes. Caught between rock & roll & a hard place, the Stones became the Beatles psychedelic foil by slapping together Their Satanic Majesties Request. The title was a lame pun on the English phrase "Their Britannic Majesties." But with that silly Satan gag, Jagger and Richards unwittingly solved any problem of "branding" their band for the next 45 years.
