Second only to Pink Floyd’s indecipherable Ummagumma. By the way, Magical Mystery Tour, the follow-up to Pepper, was a let-down as well.

Pepper in ’67, the Beatles showed a new level of sophistication, as well as a genius for altruistic themes. Caught between rock & roll & a hard place, the Stones became the Beatles psychedelic foil by slapping together Their Satanic Majesties Request. The title was a lame pun on the English phrase “Their Britannic Majesties.” But with that silly Satan gag, Jagger and Richards unwittingly solved any problem of “branding” their band for the next 45 years. My sympathies to the devil…
